It’s always funny how imagination runs wild in the absence of stern proof and real data. Only a week ago, a lot of people were expecting to see Yamaha rolling out an R1M with a bigger engine and more power. Instead, Iwata preferred to leave the 2015 R1 as it was, in the confines of the World Superbike homologation regulations and add an extra edge to it in the form of electronically-adjustable suspensions.
The R1M is dedicated to riders who spend some more time on the race track and are searching for an extra edge to provide perfect, precise settings and flawless performance.

Öhlins electronic suspensions step into the game

There are two main things which tell the R1M and the R1 apart: the carbon fiber bodywork and the Öhlins suspensions. The R1M received electronic racing suspension (ERS) from Öhlins for precise, on-the-fly adjustments and instant recall. These suspensions add to the existing electronic package of the base R1 and are complemented by a Communication Control Unit with a GPS function.

This CCU enables the rider to store riding data and send it over to a specialized Yamaha Y-Track phone or tablet app for analysis. Track overlaying is also possible for an even more real-world racing performance analysis.

The added weight of the extra electronics and special suspension had to be compensated, so carbon fiber bodywork elements have been used. The R1M arrives with a carbon cowl, side panels, tail section and fenders. Still, the racey version of the R1 is 1 kg (2.2 lb) heavier, tipping the scales at 200 kg (441 lb) wet.

As for the rest, the 2015 R1M sports the same exquisite trim: 200 hp, banking-responsive traction control, quickshifting, anti-wheelie and slide control, unified braking and ABS brakes, plus launch control, and riding modes.

However, unlike the 2015 R1, the R1M will be manufactured as a special edition bike, therefore only 500 units will be available. The livery is Carbon Fiber/Liquid Metal, and the US price tag reads $21,990. If you fancy electronic suspensions and track-derived data management, you’d better hurry to make a deposit with your nearest Yamaha dealer.

We’ve been there in Milan when the wraps were pulled off the new 2015 R1 and R1M, so we prepared a live photo gallery for you to check out.
