Volvo is best known for giving away its greatest invention to the world for free. We’re referring to the three point seat belt, which was patented in 1955.
Alhough the Swedish auto and truck maker is still making research efforts for safety’s sake, Volvo also develops occupant-oriented comfort features.
The newest of the lot comes in the form of an updated CleanZone multi-filter air con system, which reduces fine dust particles by 70 percent compared to a car without the new multi-filter system.
As you might’ve guessed by now, this new multi-filter was developed for models that are underpinned by the SPA platform, with the 2015 XC90 SUV chosen to be the first Volvo to adopt the new equipment.
As simply put as possible, the filter's main job is to keep out of the cabin some harmful and irritating pollutants such as nitrogen oxides and hydrocarbons, ground-level ozone, as well as unpleasant odours.
The multi-filter is just one part of the new Interior Air Quality System of the XC90. Another important part of the ensemble is a sensor that monitors the incoming air for noxious substances. If the level of harmful substances becomes too high, the Volvo XC90’s air intakes will then close automatically.

45 per cent of the industrialized world’s population suffers from a form of allergy or hypersensitivity
Peter Mertens, senior vice president of Volvo Cars research and development, says that “with this filter we are now at the forefront of the industry in terms of particle separation.” This multi-filter design intercepts particulates and pollen thanks to a layer of active charcoal said to effectively remove contaminants. As simply put as possible, the filter's main job is to keep out of the cabin some harmful and irritating pollutants such as nitrogen oxides and hydrocarbons, ground-level ozone, as well as unpleasant odours.
