The new model is dubbed 2015.5 because it follows in the footsteps of an extensive styling update that took place in 2014. Basically for next year, the Swedes added a new drivetrain to the line-up that features their latest technology. The Drive-E engines are a mid-model year addition while the previous engines are carried over.

Inside the cabin, things feel premium to the touch but look rather uninteresting. Basically, if it wasn’t for the center console we could’ve mistaken the 2015 S60 with an older generation Opel Astra G and that simply won’t cut it. The dash is also simple and while some prefer it that way, it’s just too little in the segment Volvo aims at with this car.

Inside the city, the new plants show why they were introduced mid-cycle and why the Swedes couldn’t wait any longer. The T5 has a turbocharged 2-liter mill making 245 HP and 350 Nm (258 lb-ft) of torque, while the T6 has a similar displacement but uses both a turbocharger and a supercharger to deliver 306 HP and 400 Nm (295 lb-ft) of torque. Both of them feel incredibly powerful and manage to return better mpg than the EPA estimates

On highways, the extra grunt of the new engines once again shows and the T6 even has a nice supercharger whine to it that we really didn’t see coming. It’s a pleasant note that you get to enjoy more and more, possibly becoming addicted over time if you’re not careful. The sound insulation is masterfully implemented, making the cabin quieter even at speeds over 62 mph (100 km/h).

Long story short, Volvo managed to create a worthy rival for the usual German and Japanese rivals in this segment. The BMW 3 Series has the edge for now, thanks to its RWD setup and better driving characteristics but the Audi A4, Lexus IS and Acura TLX are in trouble, especially due to the pricing this car has. We explain everything in our full review.
