Just when we thought Volkswagen's engine ranges couldn't get any more complicated, they do something crazy. When the mid-life facelift for the Polo was introduced this spring, the company talked about about a 1-liter turbo engine with three cylinders. It had 90 horsepower and we were convinced it was only going to be offered on specific fuel-sipping models, like the BlueMotion we just talked about. Oh how wrong we were!
While searching through Polo models for tech facts, we discovered there's another 1.0 TSI engine offered. It still has three cylinders, 12 valves and a turbo, but output has been bumped all the way to 110 PS. Perhaps even more impressive is the fact that it produces 200 Nm of torque when most 3-cylinder non-turbo engines make less than 100 Nm.
The spec sheet reveals that with this engine and a standard 6-speed manual, the Polo will accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in just 9.3 seconds and on to a top speed of 197 km/h.
The Polo still has its 1.2 TSI engine with 110 PS, which benefits from the same gearbox, the same BlueMotion technology and complies with the same Euro 6 regulations. It even costs about the same:
The fuel economy of the 1-liter turbo is going to be better and if local governments tax on emissions, the fact that it produces only 99 grams of CO2 is a definite plus for the 3-banger. They even offer it on the Cross Polo! As far as we can tell, the only disadvantage is that you can't gave it with DSG… yet.
