When Volkswagen revealed the first photos and details of its all-new Passat, they said as many as 10 different engines would be available. However, when the German market configurator was launched, only 4 were revealed: one 1.4 TSI and three different 2.0 TDI diesels, including the 240 PS flagship twin-turbo.
Soon after that, we learned of the 120 PS 1.6-liter base diesel, thanks to the British market launch and a plug-in hybrid system for the Passat GTE. Today, we stumbled upon two more engines coming to the mid-size sedan next year.

Volkswagen Romania's official online configurator lists the 1.8 TSI and 2.0 TSI engines as being available on the very top-spec Passat Highline sedan and estate models. The German and British configurators still don't offer these large petrol engines. So is it a mistake? No. VW Romania uses an internal company software system, which basically means all the numbers are the same as they would be for the German market.

We spoke with VW local officials and they told us the 1.8 and 2-liter turbo engines will enter production at the end of February 2015. The Germans have decided to offer only the models they can buy right now, while Romania buyers are being allowed to make a more informed buying decision.

The engines themselves are familiar to any VW fan. The 1.8-liter is the same unit offered on SEAT Leon models and pushes 180 horsepower though either a 6-speed manual or DSG automatic. Meanwhile, the bigger 2.0 TSI is gets the same 220 PS output as on a Golf GTI and is available only with DSG, front-wheel drive and Adaptive Chassis Control.

1.4 TSI with AWD?

Another thing we noticed is that the 1.4 TSI is listed as being available with a six-speed manual and 4Motion all-wheel drive. This 150 PS mill has, to our knowledge, never been available with all-wheel drive on any other car, not even the Audi Q3. Somewhat ironically, this model is cheaper to buy than a front-wheel drive 1.4 TSI fitted with a DSG gearbox (because of the Active Cylinder Technology).

Base model Passats are also listed as having a 125 PS version of the same 1.4-liter turbo engine, available from a very affordable €22,400, which isn't bad for such a large German car.

By our count, this brings the Passat engine total to 9. That means the only one still missing is the 280 PS 2-liter turbo.
