The first BlueMotion version of the all-new Passat B8 has just joined the existing lineup of engines available in Germany. Prices start at €29,425 (€30,500 for the Passat Variant) and for that you get a 1.6-liter TDI that scores an A+ for efficiency.
The engine is the same as the one offered with Trendline and Comfortline models, delivering 120 PS and 250 Nm of torque from 1,500 rpm. However, fuel consumption drops from 4 liters to 3.7 liters per 100 kilometers. Also, CO2 emissions are set at 95 grams per kilometer.

The differences are admittedly small, but the fact that 10 grams have been reduced could make a world of difference for company car buyers.

The price increase is tiny, only a few hundred euros. We think it's largely down to the specially designed 6.5 J x 16 Copenhagen alloy wheels fitted to the car. Also contributing to the reduced fuel consumption are the aerodynamically optimized radiator grille and radiator shutter.

Equipped with a six-speed manual gearbox, the Passat BlueMotion is a tad on the slow side. It covers the first 100 km/h in 10.8 seconds and reaches a top speed of 210 km/h (130 mph). The estate version needs 11 seconds to accelerate and stops once you've achieved 208 km/h (129 mph).

This being a Volkswagen, there are plenty of options to spend extra money on. Metallic paints add €590, navigation is a €2,000 bit of kit and LED headlights cost €1,070.

There are a few competitors worth considering. For example, Ford's Mondeo 1.6 TDCi ECOnetic has 115 PS and emits 94 grams per kilometer. It has slightly more torque but gets to 100 km/h in 12.1 seconds, and its top speed is only 192 km/h (119 mph). Skoda also has a green version of the Octavia that puts out just 85 grams per kilometer (equivalent to 3.2 l/km). It might not be as premium, but it's cheaper to buy.
