How hardcore can a hot hatch get? In America, that answer seems to be "look at the Golf R".
The previous generation was only brought Stateside because people were asking for it. Hot hatchbacks still haven't caught on in the US. Audi is bringing the S3 as a sedan, Mercedes the A 45 AMG as a four-door coupe and a crossover and Honda still has no Civic Type R. So then, the 2015 VW Golf R presented at the 2014 Detroit Auto Show is a special car.

It will be available in the US late this year, costing about $33,000 or there about. Power comes from a brand new 2.0-liter turbo engine. Its boost has been kicked up a notch, so the output is just under 300 hp if you're American or exactly 300 PS if you're European. With an optional DSG gearbox, that means 0 to 60 in under 5 seconds, making this the faster Golf ever built.

Based on the seventh-generation Golf, this Euro-spec model is actually a preview for what Americans will get, since it's a three-door and the R will be imported as a 5-door. So what do you guys think, shouldn't we get this 3-door as well and save $500?
