2015 Toyota Aygo Gets 4 Euro NCAP Stars

As the all-new Toyota Aygo prepares to reach dealerships, it also took a trip to Euro NCAP to make sure it’s suitable for the daily commute and city driving. The 2015 Aygo received a four-star rating, which is the best we've seen in this class so far. The lack of generous crumple zones and ultra-modern active safety features is what keeps the A-segment vehicles from reaching into the 5-star zone.*

The model tested was the 5-door left-hand-drive version which weighs 875 kg (1,929 lbs) and comes with safety features including 8 airbags, pre-tensioned seatbelts, seatbelt reminder, ISOFIX anchorages, Vehicle Stability Control and Anti-lock Brake System as standard.

During the frontal impact, the passenger compartment remained stable, with dummy readings indicating good protection of the knees and femurs of the driver and passenger. However, the steering column, ignition barrel and the edge of fascia and console presented a risk of injury to occupants depending on their position in the seats.

In the side barrier test, the 2015 Aygo scored maximum points with good protection of all body areas, thing that also applied in the more severe side pole test, apart from the chest protection which here got only the “adequate” grade.

The Aygo also scored maximum points for protection against whiplash injury and child occupants safely restrain in special seats. This unfortunately can’t be said about pedestrians, where only the bumper scored good, the hood being rated adequate or marginal in some areas.

Rounding everything up, the adult occupant protection scored 80%, child occupants 80%, pedestrians got 62% and safety assists received a 56% rating, all summing up for an Euro NCAP 4-star overall safety rating.

*For instance, the new Renault Twingo also received a four-star Euro NCAP rating.
