It seems a new 2-liter boxer turbo engine and a well engineered chassis were enough to seduce Australians into Subaru WRXs. According to the local division, no less than 691 examples of the all-new sports sedan were sold in April, the best month ever.
Australia is an excellent barometer for what's going to happen with the WRX. It's always been a good place to sell Subarus and it's also the third biggest market globally for the WRX, right after America and Japan.

Broken up a bit, the April total of 691 cars is divided into 550 regular WRXs and 141 STIs. That's a ratio of about 4 to 1, but the numbers are misleading, since the STI has only been available since for half the month.

A small number of cars in a small market doesn't sound that important. But it shows full-year sales could reach 5,000 per annum. Compare that with the coupe-thousand Evos sold globally and the big picture starts to form.

And get this, in Australia the WRX was the brand's second best selling car after the Forester, which only narrowly managed to best it, by 37 units. It's the land of the petrolhead, this land of all things that want to kill you!

Part of the explanation is that the new WRXs are cheaper. The base model starts at just AU$38,990, while the STI is AU$49,990. You can't get a 300 horsepower all-wheel drive sports sedan for less.
