If you’re looking into installing a larger screen in your car, be it old or new, the best way to go isn’t necessarily a third-party head unit but a custom dash mod that allows for the installation of a tablet.
And in many cases, the iPad is the preferred choice for a series of reasons, including the iOS ecosystem that offers such a refined experience from one end to another.

Soundman Car Audio has created a custom dash mod for the 2015 Subaru WRX to install an iPad and thus get rid of the factory-installed head unit. The WRX mod is part of a series of other custom kits that were created recently and that also included models for the Dodge Ram and Ford Mustang.

The device is a 9.7-inch iPad that was installed vertically to perfectly fit the center console. However, a series of modifications have also been needed, so the iPad slightly covers the bottom controls. Soundman Car Audio says you can still use them just fine and this is pretty much the only inconvenient that comes with this dash mod.

Today I want to show you one of my favorite dash mods. For this Subaru WRX, I moved the A/C controls to the center console and mounted a Soundman 9.7" iPad kit vertically in the stereo panel. The OEM stereo is accessible when the iPad is undocked from the dashboard. This dash panel has a built in Apple Lighting connector,” he explains on YouTube.

The only way to avoid covering the bottom controls would have been going for a smaller iPad, such as the 7.9-inch iPad mini. However, it goes without saying that the 9.7-inch version offers a larger screen estate, which is exactly what most drivers want these days.

The good thing, however, is that once the iPad is removed from the console the factory radio is still available.

Of course, building such a dash mod yourselves is still possible, but it’s not really the job that everyone can do, especially if you’re hoping for premium quality as it’s the case of mod here.
