The third generation of the tiny smart fortwo is almost here and testing prototypes have already started wearing the production version bodywork trim.
As we were reporting last week, the 2015 smart fortwo will have a similar length with the current generation, but its width will increase considerably to better accommodate its two passengers and put less pressure on its electronic stability control system during hard cornering.
Despite being co-developed with Renault, from whom it will borrow its three-cylinder gasoline engines, the new fortwo will be a standalone model, without a French brother.
It will have a Renault cousin though, in the shape of the new Renault Twingo, which will technically be a re-badged smart forfour (or fortwo+2).
All three cars share the same platform, with the rear-engine and rear-wheel drive layout of the previous smart fortwo generations being kept.
Powertrain-wise, the 2015 fortwo will have a range of versions of the aforementioned Renault three-cylinder – in both naturally-aspirated and turbocharged guise, and a Tesla-sourced electric engine that's set to replace the current three-cylinder diesel engine. The car is expected to be officially unveiled in February 2014, with the public launch to take place at the 2014 Geneva Motor Show in March.
