The Paris Motor Show is approaching fast and with it the new smart models we were promised are beginning to take shape. Daimler's smart division has published a video in which the next-gen city cars are detailed.
The idea here is to explain how the numerous concepts smart has shown us over the years have shaped and influenced their designs. From a single-box design, the new fortwo will become a two-box, a bit like a regular hatchback. The famous safety cell is also bigger, a pronounced design element dominting the hind-side quarters.

The fresh third-generation fortwo will ride on a modular platform shared with the new Renault Twingo. Power will come from a new direct-injected gasoline-burning three-cylinder engine mounted at the back and coupled with either a conventional manual or a automatic at extra cost.

It's believed that like the Twingo 3, base models will only have 70 hp and 91 Nm (67 lb-ft) from a naturally aspirated 0.9-liter petrol engine. There should also be a turbocharged version with 90 hp and 135 Nm of torque (100 lb-ft), with the Brabus version expected to get somewhere between 100 and 110 hp from engine mods.

The two-door fortwo is believed to get a wider track, as suggested in the video. 100mm (4 inches) added to the car's width will increase stability for better handling, but the overall length that makes it so easy to park will remain the same. Much more comprehensive changes are planned in the case of the forfour.

The old one was based on the Mitsubishi Colt and thus the size of a supermini. However, this second generation model will measure measure 3,500mm (137 inches), thus making it 252mm (10 inches) shorter or the size of a Peugeot 108. Like the Twingo 3 and fortwo, the engines will be mounted at the back and offered with manual or automatic gearboxes.
