If the Nissan Cube doesn’t rock your boat too much, the 2015 Scion xB may be the alternative you were looking for. The intriguing compact hatchback has been recently updated for the 2015 model year, but the box-shaped profile is still there.
The square-ish xB isn’t about form follows function. All things considered, the Toyota-owned company just wanted to differentiate itself visually from the sea of compact hatchbacks sold in North America. Nevertheless, the 11.6 cubic feet (328.4 litres) of cargo volume is pretty good for this car segment.

For 2015, Scion kitted the xB with a standard rear back-up camera, which is forward thinking if you consider that rearview cameras will be mandatory on new vehicles sold in the USA from May 2018. In terms of pricing, the base trim with the five-speed manual transmission can be had for $17,120, while the xB with the four-speed automatic model goes for $18,070 minus the $770 destination fee.

As for motivation, the 2015 Scion xB is powered by a 2.4-liter 2AZ-FE four-cylinder engine that delivers 158 ponies and 162 lb-ft (219 Nm) of torque. Both the stick shift and automatic are rated by the EPA an estimated 22 mpg (10.7 l/100 km) city and 28 mpg (8.4 l/100 km) highway, which isn’t bad at all.

16-inch wheels come as standard together with amenities like power windows with driver side auto down, remote keyless entry and a 6.1-inch display for the infotainment system. If you need more than that, on-the-go connectivity and satellite navigation come with the optional BeSpoke Audio system.
