It is pretty much common knowledge now that the upcoming third generation of the tiny smart fortwo, its forfour bigger brother and the recently-unveiled Renault Twingo are all sharing a common architecture, with all three models being rear-engined and rear-wheel drive.
While everyone has already arrived at the conclusion that both Daimler and Renault have put their engineers at work for the common good, it seems that the cars themselves are actually a bit more smart than Renault at the core.

We are of course talking about the brains behind the architecture of the cars, which has been a smart trait since 1998, when the first generation of the fortwo (then called City Coupe) was launched.

According to the current head of smart, Dr. Annette Winkler, the recently-revealed Renault Twingo city car is borrowing about 70 percent of its components from the upcoming smart forfour.

The 30 percent left comprise of the engines, which are Renault's 0.9 liter three-cylinder in either naturally aspirated or turbocharged guises, the transmissions and the styling both inside and out.

We should also mention that the 2015 forfour will also be the first smart not to be built at the plant in Hambach, France, but on the same line with the Renault Twingo, in Novo Mesto, Slovenia.

Even though most of the insides are shared between the smart and the Renault, the forfour will be a tad shorter than the Twingo, while also having a slightly wider engine range as it will also offer a fully electric version.
