2015 Renault Espace Interior: First Photos

Besides having the most interesting design of any large MPV, the new Espace also has a very nice cab, as we can see from these very first images leaked from one of the French company's design labs.

We were honestly taken by surprise by Renault's work, which is unlike anything in the segment. Instead of a wide-open atmosphere like the Citroen Gran C4 Picasso offers, the Espace has a wide console separating the driver from his passenger. One long, flowing piece of dash connects a huge infotainment screen, a Mercedes-like short gear selector and controls for all in-car functions.

The R-Link is larger than any Renault, probably around 15 inches in diagonal. The gear selector is shaped like a question mark and has a chrome finish and a leather patch on top. Surprisingly, the controls for the air conditioning system are even simpler than on the Clio, which is by no means a bad thing.

It's been a long time coming

You'd never think that an MPV could ever stir a passion, but the fifth generation of Espace is something Renault has wanted to build for about five years now but couldn't because of the economic climate. They really have thrown everything at it, including what's clearly a very interesting full-LED headlight system. Instead of the jewel-like systems used by Audi and SEAT, Renault's has only two projector units per headlight, giving the front end a "concentrated" appearance.

Around the back, designers have worked really hard to hide the boxy shape of the boot, which maximizes cargo space. It's less keen than the front, but the humps over the wheel arches with protrude into the headlights are winners in our book. Thanks to these leaked photos, you can see that the Espace rides really high and has scuff plates at both ends, like a crossover.

Stay tuned for more as the Espace is about to make its debut at the Paris Motor Show next week.

He also loves local car culture from all over the world, so don't be surprised to see him getting excited about weird Japanese imports, low-rider VWs out of Germany, replicas from Russia or LS swaps down in Florida.
