When Porsche told the world that they would be launching diesel-powered cars, the heartbeat of the auto industry skipped a beat. It was the same feeling we got when we saw cars like the Panamera or the Cayenne originally being unveiled. However, if it wasn’t for these bold moves, we might not be having the Stuttgart-based company to show for at all today.
Fast forward to today and the SUVs and diesels are doing better with the Porsche badge on them than anyone ever expected. In doing so, research in the field was pushed forward and we some really impressive units using compression ignition these days.
Therefore it is only natural that Porsche offers all the bits and pieces all other cars in the range get on these torque monsters as well like Performance Start for example. Don’t know what that is?
Performance Start is the Porsche lingo for launch control. This feature is usually part of the Sport Chrono package and is available for the entire range except the diesel Cayenne. Well, not anymore.
The 2015 models are getting this option as well, shaving 0.1 seconds off the 0-62 mph (100 km/h) sprint time. That is rather disappointing and really puts things in perspective. The price tag will be €760 in Germany and $770 in the US. In the grand scheme of things, it’s not a lot, especially considering how much a Porsche can cost but since the improvement is so small, I’d think twice before checking that box too.
Getting back to the car itself, the Cayenne Diesel accelerates from 0 to 62 (100 km/h) in 7.3 seconds and honestly, that difference of 0.1 seconds could be offset by a gust of wind or even having a .... heavier passenger in the car...
On other models, the Sport Chrono package and its built-in Performance Start makes a slightly bigger difference that can go from 0.2 seconds to around 0.3 seconds on a couple of Panamera models for example.
The Cayenne Diesel uses a 3-liter V6 that is capable of churning out 262 HP and 580 Nm (428 lb-ft) of torque. The Tiptronic gearbox allows it to reach a top speed of 221 km/h (137 mph) while the sprint from 0 to 62 mph (100 km/h) take 7.3 seconds, 7.2 with the Sport Chrono package as we told you already.
To activate Performance Start all you have to do is push the Sport Plus button on the center console while the car is standing completely still. Then push the lever of the 8-speed automatic gearbox in drive, keep the brake pedal pressed and mash the throttle beyond the kick down pressure point. The dash will show a warning telling you that Performance Start has been activated and releasing the brake pedal will launch the SUV.
