In Europe, the subcompact crossover SUV segment is hot stuff these days. Everybody wants a piece of the action, automakers and customers alike. The latest addition to the segment is the 2015 Opel Mokka, which can now be had with a 1.6-liter turbo diesel mill and the Opel OnStar suite of connectivity solutions.
With over 400,000 of these babies sold to date, the Opel Mokka and its British brother from Vauxhall is a commercial success story. Introduced in 2012, the Mokka is the European cousin of the Buick Encore, and it has a lot going for it. Take the all-new 1.6-liter turbo diesel mill as a prime example of its finer points.
The original 1.6 CDTI delivers 136 horsepower (100 kW) while the all-new 1.6 CDTI Whisper Diesel makes do with 110 HP (81 kW) and 300 Nm (221 lb-ft) of torque from 2,000 rpm. The entry-level oil burner promises “exemplary responsiveness, pleasant running smoothness, and low consumption.” Is that so?
According to Opel, the 2015 Opel Mokka 1.6 CDTI is capable of returning as low as 4.1 l/100 km (68.9 UK mpg) and 109 grams of C02 per kilometer on the combined cycle. Coupled to a six-speed manual, the entry-level turbo diesel engine can propel the Mokka to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 12.5 seconds.
From 80 km/h to 120 km/h (50 mph to 75 mph) in fifth gear, this Mokka needs 11.8 seconds. In a nutshell, it’s not going to win any hill climb race anytime soon. Available to order at prices starting at €24,185, the 2015 Opel Mokka 1.6 CDTI Whisper Diesel also introduces the Opel OnStar suite of techy goods.
The highlight of the OnStar suite is that the system offers 4G / LTE access to the Internet via Wi-Fi connectivity, automatic crash response, roadside services, and many more. The first year of usage if free of charge. On an ending note, the OnStar suite comes as standard on the Opel Mokka Cosmo trim level.
