The B-segment hot hatch segment has yet another new contender, this time coming from Russelsheim. Opel has officially revealed the 2015 Corsa OPC, a car that hopes 207 hp will be enough to dethrone the Renault Clio RS and the MINI Cooper S.
Like the previous generation, the 2015 model is powered by a 1.6-liter Turbo ECOTEC engine, which delivers the 207 hp goods we already mentioned and 280 Nm (206 lb-ft) of torque (with overboost, standard is 245 Nm) channeled to the front axle through a six-speed manual gearbox. 0 to 100 km/h takes only 6.8 seconds, which makes this 0.1s slower than the Clio RS and the new MINI Cooper S, despite them having less power.
Yes, it's still very quick off the line and capable of reaching 143 mph (230 km/h), but the Corsa OPC is also economical, as it needs only 7.5 liters / 100 km (37.6 mpg UK), equivalent to 174 grams of CO2 emissions per kilometer.
As standard, the supermini comes equipped with 17-inch wheels shod in Michelin 214/45 R17 tires and 308mm front discs. However, those who plan frequent track use may go for the optional Performance Package, which will add a mechanical limited slip differential from Drexel, larger 18-inch wheels and bigger 330mm Brembo disc brakes.
Cosmetically, the new Corsa OPC feels very familiar yet different at the same time. Some of the bodywork has been carried over because this is a reengineered car. However, the headlights and front bumper have a totally different look. Beefier side skirts than on the regular Corsa have also been added, while the suspension is 10mm shorter. Finally, the back end of the car features dual exhaust pipes Remus and a diffuser.
With so much of the development having taken place at the Nurburgring, we expect this 2014 Corsa OPC to be the best in its segment in terms of track performance. However, we expect a base price in the region of €25,000 or more, which will make picking this over the MINI Cooper S and VW Polo GTI quite tricky.
