We often joke about the Nissan Versa Note around the office for being so slow, but there's an undeniable need for really cheap cars that will get you from point A to B in relative comfort and with good mileage. We're not talking Toyota Prius mileage, we're talking "I don't want to pay over $16,000 for a new car" mileage.
Last year, I wrote an article about a Japanese market car called the Note Axis. It was just like the US-market Versa Note, except it had been dressed up with pretty accessories. At the time, I suggested that it would be cool if America got a dressed up Note, and it looks like Nissan was listening. At the 2014 Chicago Auto Show today, Nissan revealed the SR model.
This keeps the same 1.6-liter 109-hp engine, and the annoying Xtronic CVT gearbox, but covers it up with cool little details. For instance, there's a new grille with tinted headlights, shiny 16-inch wheels and some other flashy goodies.
Inside, there's a leather steering wheel which is supposed to look like the 370Z and suede-like fabric seats with orange accent stitching. You're never going to confuse the Note SR for a real luxury car, but who doesn't want orange seats and a leather steering wheel for the car they're going to live with every day?
