The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, or IIHS for short, awarded its "Top Safety Pick Plus" rating to the 2015 Nissan Murano. A batch of results were released today, and the new Nissan SUV was one of only two models that performed well.
The 2015 Murano got a rating of "Good" in all five scenarios required for the Top Safety Pick and went the extra mile with a "Superior" rating for front crash prevention given to models equipped with optional Forward Emergency Braking.
IIHS officials said the 2015 Murano was the best performer in the critical small overlap test. In this scenario, only 25% of the total front section of the car is impacted. A quarter of all the deaths in new cars occurs in small overlap crashes because the impact puts tremendous strain on the safety cell of the car. All the airbags deployed and performed their job of protecting the occupant's head well.
"The designation of the IIHS 'Top Safety Pick Plus' for the all-new 2015 Murano is exactly what Nissan expected for a vehicle that has always set the trends in its segment," said Fred Diaz, senior vice president, Sales & Marketing, Parts & Service, U.S.A, Nissan North America.
All new Muranos come with Nissan's Advanced Air Bag System (AABS) with a dual-stage supplemental front airbag, seat belt and occupant classification sensors. The suite also includes front seat-mounted side-impact supplemental airbags, roof-mounted curtain side-impact supplemental airbags with rollover sensor for front and rear-seat outboard occupant head protection and a driver knee airbag.
Available from around $29,560, the 2015 Murano SUV comes standard with a 260 horsepower 3.5-liter DOHC 24-valve V6 that returns 28 mpg highway. To read the full IIHS report on the latest SUV crash tests, read the press release below.
