2015 Mustang EcoBoost Not Getting a Fancy Name

The EcoBoost-powered 2015 Ford Mustang won’t be sold with a fancy package name. In short, if you were hoping that the new 2.3-liter four-cylinder will mark the return of the SVO Mustang, you’ll just have to forget about it.
This piece of information comes via Torque News, who recently had a chat with Ford global communications manager Alan Hall. Asked whether the EcoBoost Mustang will carry some sort of special name, he replied that the four-cylinder pony won’t be more than just an option over the standard V6. No fancy named package, no special trimline.

The author adds, however, that Ford might introduce a special package for the sixth-generation Mustang, but not for the 2015 model year. When will that happen? It’s a bit too early to speculate since Ford has yet to announced the full details around the new pony.

Reintroduced after a 21-year hiatus, the 2.3-liter four-cylinder engine debuted on the Ford Mustang in 1979, when the third-generation (fox body) model went on sale. The most famous four-pot Mustang was the 1984-1986 SVO model. The turbocharged unit delivered up to 205 hp, just a bit less when compared to the range-topping GT V8 model. However, the SVO cost thousands more than a comparably equipped GT.

Getting back to the new 2.3-liter EcoBoost, Ford says it will produce “more than 305 hp and 300 lb-ft” of torque, but official numbers have yet to be released. We’ll probably find out more in the coming months, before the 2015 Mustang is being shipped to dealerships in the fourth quarter of the year.
