2015 MINI Cooper S Gets 211 HP with JCW Tuning Kit at Essen

While we were shooting the M Performance parts stand over at BMW we kept noticing an out of ordinary MINI being photographed at the stand next to us. Therefore, we had to go over there and see what was going on. At first, we though it was the new MINI John Cooper Works Hardtop but then we realized it was only the Cooper S.

However, the MINI people told us that confusion was understandable as this Cooper S was wearing the brand new John Cooper Works body parts that the Brits decided to unveil here for the first time.

The aero bits are made up of a new front bumper that basically shows us how the JCW Hardtop will look like, the new rear bumper that is extremely aggressive with a massive diffuser round the back that houses two carbon fiber exhaust tips and a big roof spoiler.

On the sides, the new JCW light-alloy wheels immediately pop-out due to their bi-color design as will the number 37 written on the door and the checkered flag on the roof. Look close enough and you’ll also notice the red brake calipers beneath the wheels, another JCW trademark feature.

Staying true to the MINI rally pedigree, the front fascia also received two extra lamps, just like they used to have back in the 1960s.

211 HP and a lowered suspension

All those things looked nice and shiny but the truly interesting bit hid under the skin. That’s where MINI installed a JCW power kit that took the 2-liter 4-cylinder turbocharged engine up from 192 HP and 280 Nm (210 lb-ft) of torque up to 211 HP and 221 lb-ft (300 Nm) of torque, numbers just shy of what the real deal will have.

Even though MINI didn’t say a word about it, we can tell you from now that the new JCW model will have 231 HP and 350 Nm (258 lb-ft) of torque.

The chassis can also be improved via a new suspension that allows you to drop the ride height between 10 and 30 mm to lower the car’s center of gravity. You’ll be able to tell if a car has this system by the red springs fitted on the front axle. The new parts are now on sale and before you buy anything, check them out first in our live photo gallery.
