2015 Mercedes E400 Twin-Turbo V6 to Replace E550 (US Sedan Only)

After the hot spyshots of the W222 S-Class caught totally undisguised, we bring you relevant news about its smaller brother, the E-Class. It too has changed this year, having made its significantly refreshed debut at the Detroit Auto Show in January.

But it seems hat's not the end of the changes taking place under the E-Class' skin. The official press release from Mercedes stated the model would have "six-cylinder petrol engines in the E 300 and E 400 that are also state-of-the-art - and for the first time feature a biturbo drive." Of course, we knew from inside information what that "400" engine meant, but never what it would replace.

A recent report from Car and Drive says the 2015 model E550 E-Class sedan will be replaced by the E400. They've actually tested the E400 prototype, which will only enter production late next year. For now, the change is going to be made to the US model, and only for the sedan (like the wagon as well though), since the C207 E-Class coupe will retain the M278 V8 in its E550.

The twin-turbo V6 displaces 3 liters, just like the one less powerful "300" models sold in Europe. It has direct injection and produces 333 PS, likely to be 'translated' as 330 hp by the US market press blurps. It doesn't sound that bad, but is not comparable to the 402 horsepower 4.7-liter M278 twin-turbo of the E550, which also has more torque.

We supposed the advantage comes when it's time to visit the pumps, but having lots of power has always been the Mercedes way.

The story and the decision behind it are a bit confusing, but they tell us the new twin-turbo V6 is pretty much a certainty.
