Beautiful, isn’t it? Elegant, imposing, fit for a tycoon. If it were a man, the 2015 Mercedes-Benz S-Class would probably be a suit and tie-type German industrialist, admitting not the one that wears a platinum-plated tie clip.

Compared to run-of-the-mill models of the W222 S-Class, the S500 Plug-In Hybrid-type business man has a forest green satin silk handkerchief neatly tucked into the pocket of his expensive suit. Why green? Well, the boot lid of the S500 reads Plug-In Hybrid, so go figure why this hue.

Like any industrialist that gave up the old-timer tie clip for the handkerchief, the presence of the S500 PHEV is, as John Berger said in its Ways of Seeing masterstroke from 1972, dependent upon the promise of power which he embodies. Incidentally, 1972 is the year the S-Class nameplate was born.

Look at that interior, then try to take in this detail: twin-turbo V6 engine, an electric motor, 442 HP and 650 Nm (479 lb-ft) of grunt. With the S65 AMG around, that’s edging into remotely alright territory, but this luxbarge has some aces up its sleeve the AMG doesn't.

5.2 seconds to 100 km/h (62 mph), 8 l/100 km (29.4 US mpg) in the real-life combined cycle and a throatier exhaust sound than the 4.7-liter V8 of the non-hybrid S500 long wheelbase are some of the go-faster details that will take you completely by surprise. This time around, the “appearances can be deceiving” idiom applies.

The 2015 Mercedes-Benz S500 Plug-In Hybrid can walk the walk and talk the talk as well, as any blue-blooded German industrialist does. It has some faults, but if you prize the aesthetic more than the intrinsic, then you’ll love the film noir-style photo gallery of our latest review. 70 wallpaper-grade photos inside.
