After years of waiting and all the recent leaks, fans of small, fun cars can now rejoice with the official debut of the next-generation Mazda2/Mazda Demio. As expected, the production version of the Mazda2 borrows heavily from the Hazumi Concept revealed earlier this year, and like the CX-5, Mazda6 and Mazda3, the all-new Mazda2 will definitely bring a unique level of styling to its segment.
At first glance, the design of the subcompact hatchback doesn’t really stray too far from the current car in terms of the overall shape, but this new styling gets a heavy dose of Mazda’s Kodo design language including the angular headlights and signature grille. The longer, more upright front end and sculpted body creases give the next-gen Mazda2 a more upscale appearance in place of the current car’s cutesy styling. Like the CX-5 and Mazda3 hatchback, the new 2 also gets a sportier look with the raked C-pillars and wider, horizontal taillights that cut into the liftgate.
Mazda only released a single image of the Mazda2’s interior, but this is all we need to see to tell that even on its smallest car, Mazda is turning around its cabin designs. The instrument panel is almost something that you’d expect from a Mercedes-Benz with a very clean layout that is only interrupted by the navigation display. The center stack sits low, and there are stitched leather accents on the dash and center console. It’s easy to assume that this model pictured is a high trim level with the perforated leather seats with contrasting red stitching. This right-hand drive, Japanese-spec model also reveals a head-up display system that will be available in the 2.
Along with the small number of images, there isn’t too much information in the press release especially when it comes to the chassis or powertrain options. Mazda does confirm the 1.5-liter Skyactive-G gasoline engine and Skyactiv-D diesel engine as well as the choice of manual and automatic transmissions, but there is no mention of the rumored Wankel-powered plug-in hybrid.
Mazda says that the all-new Mazda2 will go on sale in Japan this fall, but there is no word as to when the new subcompact would be available in the U.S. or other global markets.
