Mazda revealed the all-new Demio hatchback in Japan this week, the same car that will wear the Mazda2 name in global markets. Only a 5-door body was shown, but way before the car's debut, company officials said there would be a sedan version as well. No 3-door hatchback like before, just a sedan and we now know what it looks like.
Normally, subcompact sedans are dreadful little things to drive and own. There's not enough room in the back for your head and needs and the ride and handling is compromised by using cheap suspension on a long body. The only upside is that they come with a slightly bigger boot than the hachback. But Mazda will probably not have any of these problems.
Based on the new Demio, we know the wheelbase is going to be very big for this class of vehicle: 2,570mm, which is comparable to a VW Golf or an Opel Astra hatch. This long wheelbase will help the sedan ride like a bigger car and handle decently.
But we're not just here to talk about engineering. These renderings were created by graphics manipulator Theophilus Chin and show how the Mazda2 sedan might look. We believe this model will debut next year and could be built separately from the hatchback. While the Japanese model will be made at Hofu for the global market, the 4-door should be assembled at a new factory in Mexico and target US customers.
So far, two engine choices have been announced for the Japanese market, a 1.3-liter petrol with 92 PS and a 1.5-liter diesel with 105 PS. However, for the US, a 1.5-liter petrol seems like a far better choice.
