French manufacturer Mash Motors announces the introduction of it first middleweight machine, the Mash Five Hundred. A brand which has literally smashed the local small-displacement market and which became the third best-seller of 125cc machine in only two years after debut (9th overall), Mash imports China-made bikes whose style complies with all the rigors of the Europeans vintage motorcycles. Coupled with the neat prices, this seems to be a very successful recipe.
Despite its name, the Mash Five Hundred is not a half-liter bike, but a 400cc-class one. And I say “class” because the actual displacement of the SOHC single is in fact 397cc. The air-cooled mill produces a maximum of 27 horsepower @7,000 rpm, and a 29Nm (21.7 lb-ft) at 5,500 revs which sounds pretty cool for a “retro bike” that tips the scales at only 151 kg (333 lb) dry.
The Mash Five Hundred has both electric and kick starting, a 280mm front disc and a 160mm drum rear one, wire spoked wheels (19” front, 18” rear), a 35mm fork and an era-correct dual-gauge instrument cluster. The frame is made from steel tubes, and the 13-liter (3.4 US gal) is adorned with rubber knee grips, and it harks back to the classic scrambler designs of yore. Add in dual chromed peashooter silencers, a small luggage rack and a one-piece two-up seat with a passenger strap and you’re all set for going retro.
Mash Five Hundred is said to arrive in stores starting with 1 October, with a price of €3,995 ($5,175) which makes a solid argument for the 2015 Yamaha SR400, itself a very attractive retro-styled machine. Optional accessories are also on their way, including a center stand, windscreen and more. The standard package also comes with a 2-year warranty and unlimited mileage, so what do you think?
