Indian Motorcycle announces a voluntary recall for certain Scout motorcycles model year 2015, after discovering that a defect in the manufacturing of the rear brake master cylinder could lead to loss of braking power. The NHTSA recall campaign 15V14200 is aimed at bringing in around 806 Indian Scout motorcycles with model names N15MSA00AA, N15MSA00AH, N15MSA00AR, N15MSA00AS, N15MSA00BA, N15MSA00BH, N15MSA00BS, N15MSA00CA, and N15MSA00CS.
The cause of this potential problem resides in the fact that “in some vehicles, the piston retaining ring located in the rear master cylinder may not fully seat into the machined groove in the master cylinder bore,” according to official papers.
The motorcycle manufacturer indicates that a machining or assembly error might have caused this problem, and that responsibility lies with the component manufacturer. The piston retaining groove was located in an incorrect position, making it impossible for the retaining ring to be fully secured.
In the effected bikes, if the problem occurs, the riders might experience a total or partial loss of braking force in the rear, with the pedal travel increasing as fluid migrates out of the brake master during operation. Tests have been carried out after repeated field failure reports and dual warranty claims. No incidents or injuries have been reported.
“Indian Motorcycle Company believes that 2 to 4% of the vehicles in the field are affected by this issue. Dealers will inspect all rear master cylinders on the identified vehicles and replace those master cylinders that do not pass the inspection procedure,” Indian adds. Consumers will be notified and scheduled for a free repair.
