Didn't McLaren already have a futuristic looking hybrid machine called simply the P1? Why yes, it did, but that didn't stop design students from making another one under the somehwat odd IED Syrma name.
Yes, this is once again the work of students at the Transportation Design School at Istituto Europeo di Design, or IED for short. It was supposedly shown at the 2015 Geneva Motor Show, but we kind of missed it and never saw it until a few Youtube videos drew our attention a few days after.
Besides being a hybrid supercar from the future, the Syrma is also focused on driver safety, though we can't imagine this low wedge on wheels would ever pass a pedestrian crash test.
In theory at least, because the car isn't exactly drivable yet, this concept car packs a total of 900 horsepower, which is about the same as the McLaren P1. The gas engine is not a twin-turbo 3.8-liter V8, though, but a 4.0-liter one, matched to a single electric motor for good measure.
From the back, it looks very futuristic, with its high-mounted exhaust hinting at the world of Formula 1 and other McLaren roadcars. There's also a dorsal fin that may have been inspired by the world of LMP1 prototypes at Le Mans. Just like the old McLaren F1, there's seating for 3 people inside behind a “teardrop windscreen” that is intended to protect the cabin from the elements.
What's interesting is that this supposedly Italian concept is actually more like an international effort. The Syrma is the brainchild of Xingwu Li from China. The designers also include Marshin Bhatt, Gaurav Anand Jagtap, Sunny Gurmukh Ramrakhiani, and Rahul Surendra Sadwelkar from India; Jacek Chrzanowski from Poland; Cho-ta Lu from Taiwan; Dror Peleg from Israel; Aldo Hernandez Schurmann from Mexico; and Reza Shahla from Iran.
