The all-new 2015 Hyundai Sonata has been awarded the maximum rating of "Top Safety Pick+" crash safety rating from the Insurance Institute of Highway Safety (IIHS). It was awarded to the Korean sedan after a barrage of test revealed it's not only safe in different crash scenarios, but can also prevent them.
Hyundai will rely on the 2015 Sonata to increase its sales in North America. The car competes with some of the most popular nameplates in the industry, like the Toyota Camry and Hyundai Accord. So it's comforting to know that it's safe.

“The Top Safety Pick+ designation recognizes state-of-the-art safety,” said IIHS president Adrian Lund. “The 2015 Hyundai Sonata is not only engineered to protect people when crashes happen, but with its optional forward collision warning system rated basic in our tests, this car can help drivers avoid some of the most common kinds of collisions altogether.”

The IIHS likes the front collision prevention system on the 2015 Sonata, but of course Hyundai has installed a number of other active safety systems as well, optional or standard: Forward Collision Warning, Blind Spot Detection, Rear Cross Traffic Alert, a Lane Departure Warning System and rear parking sensors.

The following video shows the mid-size sedan undergoing the IIHS's small overlap crash test. Only a quarter of the car's front end impacts the barrier, meaning the areas that do hit are subjected to much higher forces. As serious as the impact seems, the passenger cell looks stable and you could probably walk away if this crash were to happen in real life.

Naturally, Hyundai is very proud of its achievement and has issued a statement to advertise the safety of its most important new sedan. It's their second Top Safety Pick+ rating in a row, after the equally new 2015 Genesis luxury/flagship model earned the same accolade.

“Occupant safety is at the forefront of Hyundai design and engineering,” said Mike O’Brien, vice president, Corporate and Product Planning, Hyundai Motor America. “Sonata’s Top Safety Pick+ recognition reinforces our dedication to occupant safety, and integrating our accident prevention technologies makes the 2015 Sonata one of the safest midsize sedans on the market today.”
