After being shown on the world wide web late in 2014, the brand new Hyundai i20 Coupe is making its official debut this week at the Geneva Motor Show. We really can't say enough good things about Hyundai for trying to revive a body style that very few automakers still offer, the sexy 3-door hatchback.
From a distance, the i20 Coupe looks the same as its normal hatch brother. But if you look close enough, you may notice that the grille has been inverted or that both the front and the rear bumpers are different. These are the same tricks they used for the i30 Coupe, though they haven't worked as well.
In addition, the i20 Coupe sits lower to the ground on 17-inch wheels and has raked rear pillars. With a Tangerine Orange paintjob and a respectable 336 liters of bot capacity, you really have to wonder why we still have the awkwardly shaped Veloster.
At launch, the engine range will be made up of familiar engines, including an 84 hp 1.25-liter Kappa and a 100 hp 1.4-liter. Two diesel will be carried over as well, the 75 hp 1.1-liter and the 90 hp 1.4-liter.
Later on in 2015, a new three-cylinder 1.0-liter Kappa T-GDI gasoline turbocharged engine will also be offered. We don't know the output yet, but on the Kia Cee'd, it produces a very respectable 120 HP (88 kW) and 172 Nm (127 lb-ft) of torque, class-leading futures unless we're mistaken.
Prices should start at about €12,000, which would make it a viable alternative to the 3-door Ford Fiesta and Opel Corsa. Sooner rather than later, a hot hatch version should also be introduced, powered by another four-cylinder turbo engine and maybe also packing Hyundai's new twin-clutch gearbox.
