Previewed by the Hyundai HCD-14 Genesis Concept at NAIAS 2013 and first shown in production-ready format at Detroit in 2014, the DH-gen Hyundai Genesis is an outlandishly curious full-size luxury car. It doesn’t wear a desirable badge, it’s not exactly luxurious and you lose around 38.2 percent of its original value after the first year of ownership.
D’you know how much money that translates to?

Let’s say you have the entry-level UK-spec Genesis, priced at £47,995. 38.2 percent of that equates to £18,334 lost after the first year of ownership, which is more than a base VW Golf S (£17,715 on-the-road). You know what bothers me even more about the 2015 Hyundai Genesis? Its sticker. In Her Majesty’s Great Britain, a Mercedes-Benz CLS 220 starts at £46,500.

Yup. We live in a day and age when an E-Class-based coupe-ified luxury sedan wearing the three-pointed star is less costly than a glorified Hyundai. Truth be told, while the base CLS doesn’t come with too many standard bits and bobs, the South Korean-made Genesis is packed full of creature comfort goods. If you can ignore the Bentley-inspired winged badge, then you may also find reasoning behind that £47,995 sticker.

Available to order from April 2nd and offered in a choice of seven exterior hues and three interior trim options, the UK-specification 2015 Hyundai Genesis full-size luxury sedan is offered in a one-grade-fits-all specification, the ritziest of them all to be specific. If you’re curious what you’re getting for that hefty bundle of pounds sterling, the attached press release goes through every highlight feature that comes with “the most refined and technologically advanced Hyundai ever made available in Europe.”

What the release doesn’t tell you though is that the “potent 3.8-litre V6 GDI engine” is actually the entry-level choice in the U. S. of America, a place where the Genesis can be equipped with a punchier 5-liter V8 for $51,500. The V6-powered UK model is only offered with rear-wheel drive, while the standard gearbox comes in the form of an eight-speed automatic box. Last but not least, we deem necessary to point out that only eight UK-based Hyundai dealers will sell the 2015 Genesis.
