2015 Husqvarna 701 Supermoto Celebrates Brand’s Return to the Streets at EICMA

Back in 2013, Husqvarna revealed an interesting concept that was mysteriously dubbed 701. It was a preview of what we’re looking at here, today, in Milan for the first time: the 701 Supermoto. This is the one bike that fans of the brand have been asking for quite some time.

So what’s all the fuss about this bike anyway? Well, to put it shortly, it’s the clear sign that Husqvarna wants to return to the streets. This is basically the model that announced that they will be offering a broader range from now on, one that caters to a wider demographic as well.

The bike put up for display at EICMA is clearly equipped for the streets. The similarities between the concept and the production model here are very big. Actually, the only immediately spottable difference is the exhaust that used to be hidden under the seat on the concept using a plastic cover and is now exposed for the street version.

Being owned by KTM at the moment, it’s no surprise that the brakes used on the Supermoto are WP that are a subsidiary of KTM themselves. Even though the 701 is built for the street you can obviously see that it can be used outside the normal ‘realm’ as well.

As we said, the turn signals are included here, as well as a taillight, both using LEDs while the headlight up front seems to be fitted with a normal, halogen bulb.

The tires give the sporty attitude away, though, as the 701 Supermoto came fitted with Continental Contiattack SM that are aiming at a more sporty kind of driving, the SM standing for Super Moto.

The engineers were looking for a lightweight bike and we can tell that by the materials used in its production. Various parts are made of magnesium, like the engine cases for example.

On the other hand, the plastic bodywork looks and feels really good to the touch. The only bad side here is the seat that could’ve used better materials to be honest, since the the saddle is made of plastic. Furthermore, even though there is a mud cover at the back, a license plate holder is still missing. All these hints seem to tell us that there might still be some work to be done until this bike reaches showrooms next year.

As a final thought, before we let you enjoy our live photo gallery, we would’ve expected this street-legal bike to be fitted with an Akrapovic exhaust. However, it looks like Husqvarna went for a standard model though. Of course, that shouldn’t be a problem as we’re sure Akrapovic will offer an aftermarket solution as well.
