Honda won't rest until the new Civic Type R is the fastest FWD car ever to lap the Nurburgring. That means taking on the might of SEAT, Renault and other automakers who covet the hot hatch title.
The hot Civic will not only be very fast, but it will also be hot as the fires of hell. The prototype they showed us in Geneva came closer to a touring car racer for the road than any other concept. But is that really enough to bring VTEC fans back? A 300 hp Civic with LSD and track tires will cost way too much for us youngsters, so what about something less expensive?
The third generation Jazz certainly looks the part of a hot car. With a bigger VTEC engine and all-round tweaks, it could be a good competitor to the multitude of other hot subcompacts. Hardcore Honda fans would surely demand such a car be powered by a 2-liter DOHC i-VTEC engine mated to a traditional 3-piece pedal set and 6-speed manual gearbox.
Unfortunately, there's never been a hot supermini from Honda and this is unlikely to change. Europe is the largest hot hatch market and with Honda sales going nowhere fast a car with limited appeal is the last thing they need.
But just looking at this cool rendering, we can't help falling in love with the idea of the Fit Type R. It looks just like the old Civic Type R box hatch from the very early 2000s. Oh old Honda, how we miss the good old days.
