It looks like Harley-Davidson is preparing a new trike for the second half of the year, and several spy shots have already surfaced. The bar and shield company is rumored to have trademarked the name “Freewheeler” earlier and industry voices with deeper knowledge of Harley’s habits also say that this might indeed become the official name of the trike’s production version.
The Freewheeler, as we’ll call this machine for now, is a slight departure from the traditional bling-ridden designs of their trikes. It sports a rather Spartan look, with rather no unnecessary elements and it totally lacks the iconic lines of the H-D Touring machines.

With strong Fat Boy DNA added to the mix, the Harley Freewheeler packs a truly massive front end with chunky fork legs and a huge chromed-out metal plate atop them serving as a mounting point for the retro headlight. There are no fairings aboard the Freewheeler and judging by its looks, it wasn’t even designed to receive them. The pull-back bars indicate a comfy riding position, while the rider floorboards account for even better ergonomics.

If you were expecting fork-mounted instruments, you’ll probably be surprised to see the dashboard loaded on top of the fuel tank, complementing the massive cruiser attire. The pillion seat is small, but the passenger position also benefits from floorboards. The bobbed rear fenders follow the lines of the small trunk, while no Tour Pak is used any longer for the Freewheeler.

Harley opted for what looks like the Twin Cam 103 air-cooled engine and it will most likely be mated to a 6-speed Cruise Drive gearbox. The front calipers look similar to the Brembo units Harley has been using in its top tier bikes. The Freewheeler could be unveiled officially at the Harley dealer meeting in August, rumor has it.
