When the FoMoCo people told us that forced induction will be employed for the mid-range S550 Mustang, we were like “For real?” Skepticism aside, when the first units were delivered to their anticipating owners, we found out a really interesting fact about the EcoBoost ‘Stang: a gizmo called Active Noise Control. Yup, just like BMW, Ford also decided to pump virtualized engine noises in the cabin.
If you remove fuse No. 27, the sixth-gen pony’s stereo and four-banger lump go rather quiet if you’re seated behind the steering wheel. Thankfully, the engine and exhaust sound on the outside are good enough for a four-cylinder turbo motor, but that didn’t stop Roush Performance to develop an aftermarket exhaust kit.
Part #421837 is officially known as “2015 Mustang 3.7L ROUSH V6 and 2.3L Ecoboost Exhaust Kit - Round Tip (304SS)” on the company’s website and you can buy the package for $571.99, free shipping included. That's not a lot of dough, more so when you find out that this kit is applicable for the V6 pony as well.
The package includes Roush Performance single tip high-flow mufflers, corrosion resistant 304 stainless steel, full mandrel bending, 4-inch flash-chromed dual wall tips and OEM hangars and mounting points. Although we’re informed that the exhaust kit doesn’t require welding, a little bit of cutting is mandatory.
In terms of aural enhancements, the axle-back exhaust system from Roush Performance leaves the debate open depending on everyone’s perception on what a pony car should sound like. As some prefer the deep tone rumble of old school ‘Stangs, some want more bangs and hisses from that twin-scroll turbocharger.
We’ve attached the two videos below to let you decide if the V6 or EcoBoost sounds better than the other with Roush's solution. As a little bonus, we also attached an instruction manual for those that have one hour and some garage tools to swap the standard exhaust for Roush Performance's aftermarket package.
