The Ford Mustang Ecoboost may be a controversial pony, but, as far as the aftermarket world is concerned, things are as positive as possible, with the turbo pathway allowing easy dipping into the potential of the engine. Most tuners are still working on this, but a few of them have already completed the work, with the latest example coming from Bama Performance.
While Ford says the EcoBoost Mustang delivers 310 hp and 320 lb-ft (434 Nm) at the crank, Bama Performance strapped the pony to a dyno, with the bone stock output being 258 HP and 277 lb-ft (376 Nm) at the wheels.

The crew remapped the ECU of the 2.3-liter four-cylinder engine and they were more than happy to publish the results. The Mustang now allows its driver to play with 283 hp and 341 lb-ft (462 Nm) at the wheels. To put that into perspective, we’ll start with the bit everybody always asks about, namely the peak gain, which sits at 25 hp and 47 lb-ft (64 Nm).

When was the last time you welded the pedal to the floor and kept it there for more than, say, five or six seconds? If you don’t visit the track all that often and want to stay on the safe side, the answer will probably be related to a not-so-recent occurring, which means that the real-world gains are much more important here.

When it comes to the curve gain, the Bama Performance Mustang EcoBoost brings 44 ponies and 66 lb-ft (89 Nm), once again at the wheels.

What does this all mean

Before anybody rushes to point out that the gains could be greater, we have to explain two things. First of all, we are talking about feasible tuning here. Then there’s the Blue Oval’s philosophy - when we spoke to Dave Pericak, Mustang Chief Engineer, at the 2014 Detroit Motor Show, he explained that Ford doesn’t likely to leave unexplored potential for tuners to tap into.
