An all-new Ford Mustang will serve as the safety car of the Quicken Loans 400 NASCAR Sprint Cup race, which will take place at the Michigan International Speedway on June 15th. Joe Hinrichs, Ford president of the Americas, will be the driver of the red fastback pony.
Quite a fitting 50th anniversary party for the Blue Oval's most iconic nameplate, ain't it? After all, the Michigan International Speedway is a little over 60 miles away from both the Blue Oval's World Headquarters and Flat Rock Assembly Plant, the latter being the facility that manufactures the sixth-generation Stang.
Just like its 1964 predecessor, the all-new Mustang features the same rear-wheel drive chassis, long hood and short rear decklid proportions that made the all-American pony so legendary. The car appointed to lead the NASCAR field to the green flag is powered by a 5-liter V8 that churns out "at least 420 horsepower and 390 lb-ft."
“Ford is very proud to have the 2015 Mustang GT pace the Quicken Loans 400 this Sunday,” declared Chantel Lenard, Ford U.S. director of marketing. “To have Mustang – a brand born of racing – in this special anniversary year, leading some of the world’s best drivers to the green flag, is special. We know our fans will enjoy seeing it out on the track.”
As of the Pocono 400 race, NASCAR Sprint Cup Series standings are led by Jeff Gordon with 498 points, Matt Kenseth (482 p), Dale Earnhardt Jr. (476 p), Jimmie Johnson (475 p) and Brad Keselowski (448 p). Turner Network Television (TNT) will provide TV coverage of the Quicken Loans 400, which airs Sunday at 1 p.m. Eastern Time.
