At the end of the day, every car out there, from an MPV-shaped econobox to a loud and proud Ferrari, needs to be safe in the eventuality of an accident. As such, entities like the NHTSA, IIHS, Euro NCAP and automakers themselves abuse vehicles to find out if sufficient protection is offered for both occupants and pedestrians.
The latest nameplate to be subjected to such barbaric treatment in the name of consumer safety and peace of mind is the S550 ‘Stang. With us since mid-2015, the sixth generation pony is the first of its breed to get independent rear suspension, a glovebox-integrated airbag, a line lock burnout feature and many goodies that were unimaginable on the S197 Mustang.
Well then, what did the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration do to the newest Mustang out there? In a nutshell, the NHTSA took a 2015 Ford Mustang V6 fastback and found out how it fares in situations such as a frontal crash, side crash and the thought-provoking rollover crash. Curious about how the 3,520 lbs (1,596 kilos) machine resisted to such dramatic scenarios?
To put it simply, it championed every individual category of the New Car Assessment Program (NCAP) like it owned the place. Five stars were awarded for everything, including overall, which isn’t that surprising considering that the 2015 is boasting with twice the airbags, as well as twice as many peripheral crash sensors compared to its highly-acclaimed fifth generation forerunner.
Upon hearing the NHTSA NCAP results, Carl Wildmann, the Mustang’s chief engineer, was kind enough to comment that “the new Mustang was built from the ground up. It is more refined, more powerful and it has everything people have come to love about Mustang for the past 50 years.” Thanks to semi-autonomous tech, improved driver assist features and an all-new inflatable airbag restraint design, we’re not surprised by those well-deserved 5 golden stars.
