As usual, the Blue Oval claims the new Super Truck delivers best-in-class anything, from horsepower and torque to towing capacity. Specifically, the updated 6.7-liter Power Stroke turbodiesel V8 engine generates 440 hp (up from 400 hp) and no less than 860 pound-feet of torque (up from 800 lb-ft).

These figures enable the 2015 F-450 Super Duty to tow as much as 31,200 and the F-350 to pull 26,500 pounds. That’s more than Chevy’s 2015 Silverado HD, which is rated at a maximum for 23,200 pounds, but the F-350 will be able to tow less than the 2013 Ram 3500 HD at 30,000 pounds.

Ford says the improved rating are a result of “designing and engineering the truck as an integrated system”, but quotes engine enhancements as well. The latter include a larger turbocharger, a and a shorter airflow from the exhaust system to the turbine that sits between the engine’s cylinder banks for “improved turbo responsiveness”.

"Our chassis people work in unison with our powertrain people to develop more than a great truck, it's a machine engineered for work," said Doug Scott, Ford Truck group marketing manager. "We're the only manufacturer that develops and builds our own powertrains in this class and when you combine that with a chassis that's purpose-built for best-in-class power and torque, you can feel the result in the way it drives, especially when towing big loads."

"The designers of the original 6.7-liter Power Stroke V8 turbo diesel predicted that it would eventually need to be upgraded for higher output," said David Ives, Ford Power Stroke technical specialist. "They designed it in a way that made it easier to add a larger turbocharger, increasing airflow and creating more power for dramatically improved performance, yet we haven't lost any efficiency."

Moving over to chassis updates, the F-350 comes with new front springs and a wide track axle, while the F-450 received redesigned rear U-joints and new leaf springs, updated front and rear stabilizer bars, shocks and larger brakes.

The 2015 Ford F-Series Super Duty will go on sale this spring.
