2015 Ford F-150 Crash Tested, Earns 5-Star Rating from the NHTSA

It’s no longer a secret that military-grade aluminum alloys are the bread and butter of the thirteenth-gen 2015 Ford F-150 pickup truck. Not only does it shed a few hundred of pounds over the 2014 model, but the 2015 F-150’s construction is also extremely safe.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration got their hands on a 2015 Ford F-150 SuperCrew and put it to the test. Wait, scrap that for “crashed it as violently as possible for fun scientific reasons.” Is it surprising that the light-duty workhorse earned the much-coveted 5-star overall rating from the NHTSA?

Not quite, to be frank. That 5-star overall score isn’t given as easily as some people might be imagining. The toughest F-150 yet claims a total of 31 safety-related innovations. Ford global product development vice president Raj Nair claims that his “team worked together for years to deliver this accomplishment, using an unprecedented combination of advanced materials throughout the all-new F-150.”

The aluminum-alloy body shell and safety-oriented system are all nice and welcomed, but the inflatable rear safety belts of the F-150 SuperCrew and Curve Control system are what matter most in our book. In addition to these, safety always starts with the frame. For the backbone of the 2015 Ford F-150, engineers developed a 12-corner front crush horn that has one purpose: to dissipate the crash energy of an impact.

We're informed that the crush horn is specifically developed to keep the crash forces away from the occupants inside the F-Series truck. Last but not least, the fully boxed frame has an extra crossmember and many bits and bobs made from high-strength steel.

All the previously mentioned safety solutions can be seen working together in the adjacent crash test video.
