Along with the super-intelligent new Panigale 1299 Panigale, Ducati also unveil a new version of the more hardcore Panigale R. Interestingly, there's now a visible rift between the S and the R, which is the highlight of our story.
You see, while the 1299 uses a bigger engine, the R still has to comply with the World Superbike homologation regulations. That means its Superquadro stays behind with a 1198cc to keep it within WSBK rules.
Still, you won't be lacking any power, as the R version revs higher to 11,500 rpm in order to deliver the exact same 205 horsepower output. Unfortunately, torque is slightly lower at 136.2 Nm (110.5 lb.ft), but on a track that's not that big of an issue.
The 2015 Ducati Panigale R also comes fully equipped with Akropovic exhaust system made from titanium with carbon fiber elements, an Ohlins suspension system and Ducati's clever new Inertial Measurement Unit. This measures data on all three axis and controls governs everything from the suspension to the brakes and power delivery.
The Panigale R also comes as standard with the Ducati Data Analyzer, something you'll have to pay extra on the normal 1299. The system is complete with GPS sensors and allows you to download date from your latest track session to your computer and analyze it.
Deliveries of these hardcore bikes will begin next February or March, depending on the market, which is likely when we will also receive some pricing information. Between the complex carbon fiber components and the state-of-the-art electronics, the only flaw we could ever find with the Panigale R has to do with the guy behind the forks.
