As an automotive conglomerate, Chrysler Group is stronger than it’s been in years. However, Marchione’s men have somewhat ignored the core Chrysler brand, which current boasts only three models, the 200, 300 and Town & Country, none of which are that new or relevant. However, the revolution will soon start in Detroit, as a new 200 sedan will bow next month during the 2014 North American Auto Show.
We’re talking about a completely new car, not the Sebring makeover they pulled on us last time. The all-new 200 sedan has just been photographed completely undisguised and it appears Chrysler isn’t making another boring car. The brand new design features lots of sexy curves and the LED lighting technology everybody loves these days.
The first thing we noticed was the 200 has gone for a four-door coupe look. The ark of the roof has a constant radius and almost travels to the taillights, not the boot. At the front, they’ve gone for a small upper grille and a larger lower one, which gives a planted look. Both have a protruding chrome bezel for a 3D effect.
The 200 will have to fight to get itself noticed, since we think it straddles two segments. Chrysler treats this FWD sedan as a premium car, so top end models will compete with with the Mercedes CLA, while low-spec cars will do battle against mid-size champions such as the Ford Fusion, Toyota Camry, Honda Accord and Mazad6.
Our spy photographers were able to send us a photo of the new 200’s interior as well. The speedometer cluster looks similar to the Dodge Dart’s. The overall design is clean and simple, with very few buttons. Instead of a stick, they’ve opted for a rotary gear selector like a Jaguar and even an electronic parking brake.
Engines and transmission option will be the same as platform-cousins like the 2014 Jeep Cherokee. Rumor has it the 200 is aiming for 38 mpg or higher o a model equipped with a nine-speed ZF automatic.
