While browsing through the inventories of Stateside Chevrolet dealers, we were gobsmacked by several listings of the 2015 Chevrolet Volt. Holding a base MSRP of $34,995, the same as the outgoing model year, the updated Volt is nowhere to be found on Chevrolet's Build Your Own configurator website.
According to a report published back in March, the second-generation Chevrolet Volt will supposedly break cover sometime next year as a 2016 model year. 'Til then there's a full year to go, thus a slightly updated 2015 model year of the first-gen more than makes sense.
If we're to believe a recent report from GM Authority, the yet to be officially announced 2015 Chevrolet Volt will get a handful of new goodies in order to keep it fresh just that bit longer until its successor arrives. RPO-level changes include the deletion of the White Diamond Tricoat exterior finish offered as an optional extra.
As for new features, these come in the form of the Iridescent Pearl Tricot exterior paint, OnStar 4G LTE with Wi-Fi hotspot capability and a package consisting of satellite navigation and a Bose premium audio system. It's pretty much certain that the powertrain has underwent minimal changes due to the fact that 2015 models from dealers and the 2014 model year Volt from Chevrolet's U.S. website claim the same 35 mpg city and 40 mpg highway.
Expect more data on the 2015 Chevrolet Volt to surface in the weeks to come. As for the second-gen Chevy Volt, former GM boss Dan Akerson pledged that it will be something like $10,000 cheaper than the outgoing model ($25,000 base sticker price) and the range will be extended "by at least 20 percent" or "up to 50-60 miles."
Some voices in the industry claim that the 1.4-liter gasoline mill used as a range extender on the current Volt will be replaced with the second-generation of the electric vehicle by the 1-liter three-cylinder turbo with 90 or 115 horsepower on tap that recently debuted on the all-new Opel Corsa E.
