2015 Chevrolet SS Gets Automatic Parking Assist as Standard

Good news! The updated Chevrolet SS is the first Chevy nameplate to get Automatic Parking Assist as standard. By coupling that to the new bits and bobs available on the 2015 model year, the ultimate sleeper vehicle is way more versatile than before.

So how does this hi-tech gizmo work on the updated SS? To put it simply, advanced ultrasonic sensors fitted on the front and rear bumpers have only one thing to do: detect the width and depth of parallel and reverse right-angle parking spaces to provide hands-free help in those nasty tight spaces.

In the case of the SS fitted with the newly available six-speed manual gearbox, the only thing you need to do once you engage the system is to operate the clutch and throttle pedal, while the Automatic Parking Assist takes care of angles and steering duties. “Even some of the most experienced drivers in the world loathe parallel parking,” said Scott Hollopeter, SS vehicle dynamics engineer. “Automatic Parking Assist is designed to help alleviate that anxiety in situations where more experience is required to park a vehicle.”

If you're the type of driver that likes specifics, than you should know that the system can detect obstacles, gauge the size of a free parking space, asses the distance to the curb and calculate optimum steering angles to do a perfect parking job. The driver of the 2015 Chevrolet SS performance sedan is told when to engage first or reverse by instructions shown on the Driver Information Center screen.

Best of all, Automatic Parking Assist can do reverse perpendicular parking as well, so how can you say no to such a helpful digital ally? “Technologies that provide help in parking and even vehicles that can park themselves started, as most technologies do, on luxury cars but they have proliferated to more mainstream vehicles,” added Michelle Krebs, senior analyst at AutoTrader. “They have broad appeal from newly licensed young drivers to older drivers and are also are attractive to people who live in increasingly congested urban areas.”

Still curious about how the system works? Then press play and enjoy the video demonstration below.
