According to the all-new SAE J2807 towing capacity standard, the all-new Chevy Silverado 1500 and GMC Sierra 1500 can tow up to 12,000-lbs. That's 500-pound over the 2014 model year versions of the light-duty pickup trucks.
Be warned though: only the bells and whistles variant is able to tow that much, while an entry-level 2015 Chevrolet Silverado Regular Cab 2WD 4.3L V6 3.43 axle is rated at just 6,100 pounds, 300 lbs less than the 2014 model year.

Before being tempted to bash the pulling credentials of the 2015 Chevrolet Silverado and its twin brother, the 2015 GMC Sierra, you should know that there was no common standard for towing capacity before SAE J2807. Basically, “SAE standard J2807: Performance Requirements for Determining Tow-Vehicle Gross Combination Weight Rating and Trailer Weight Rating” is the best method around to determine the precise towing capacity of any light-duty pickup truck out there.

For the 2015 model year, the top-of-the-range Chevy and GMC light-duty trucks can be kitted with a 6.2-liter V8 EcoTec3 engine and a Max Trailering Package consisting of a 9.76-inch rear axle, heavy-duty springs, better cooling, retuned shock absorbers, a trailer brake controller and a G80 locking rear diff. This top dollar Double Cab 6'6'' box configuration with 3.42 axle is one of only two capable of offering you a towing capacity of 12,000-lbs without putting any serious or potentially hazardous strain on the truck.

“We engineered the new Silverado and Sierra 1500s to be our most capable light-duty pickups ever,”
declared Jeff Luke, executive chief engineer at General Motors. “For 2015, we will build on that strong foundation to implement SAE J2807 while maintaining robust towing capability across the lineup.” You can find out more about the towing credentials of the entire GM light-duty pickup range by checking out the press release below.
