Chevy announced that the Silverado 1500 Crew Cab will be offered in Special Service Vehicle (SSV) trim specially adapted for police use starting this summer. The General Motors subsidiary says that the pickup truck will offer the same capabilities, efficiency and durability as the standard truck, the only changes being those special features designed for police use.
Available on the Silverado 1500 Crew Cab only in 1WT or 1LS trims, the SSV package includes the potent 5.3-liter EcoTec3 V8 powerplant, which churns out 355 horsepower and 383 lb-ft (519 Nm) of torque, while delivering "the highest EPA-rated fuel economy for a two-wheel drive V8 full-size pickup" according to Chevrolet. The rear-wheel drive model boasts a fuel economy of 23 miles per gallon highway.

A four-wheel drive version is also available either with the standard 6 feet 6 inches pickup box or the more compact 5 feet 8 inches box. When it comes to accessories specially designed for police use, the Chevy Silverado SSV benefits from a 170-amp alternator and a 730-CCA auxiliary battery for operating the lights, radios, computers, video cameras or other equipment while parked and with the engine turned off.

The high-output alternator and auxiliary battery preserve the charge of the vehicle's main battery. Contented for service, the Silverado SSV is also equipped with a 110-volt outlet for small appliances and a power supply for four upfitter switches located on the center stack for increased accessibility and comfort.

As for interior comfort features, the 2015 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 SSV comes standard with vinyl rear seats along with large rear passenger doors for easy entry. Chevy's all-new police enforcer on wheels offers an assortment of interior options, such as front center seat delete, an auxiliary dome lamp, an electronic four-wheel drive switch on the dash, wiring for grille, lamps and sirens, rear-vision camera and a flasher system for head and tail lamps.

“Last year, the Silverado 1500 was awarded for its low cost of ownership, a key purchasing factor for municipalities and government agencies,” said Ed Peper, U.S. vice president for GM Fleet & Commercial. “Nearly two-thirds of the Silverado SSV’s cab is made of high-strength steel, and inlaid triple-sealed doors create a strong, quiet mobile workspace to conduct daily business.”
