Most petrolheads like the C7 Corvette for bringing the nameplate into the 21 century much better than the slightly half-baked C6. Out of all the variants available, it’s easy to guess what anybody’s favorite is. Yes, we’re referring to the 2015 Corvette Z06.
To make a long story short, this all-American hunk is the quickest accelerating, most gutsy and most extreme road-going Corvette ever. It still uses the same 6.2-liter small-block V8 of the unadulterated Vette, but with the Z06, General Motors engineers supercharged the bejesus out of the lump.
Dubbed the LT4, this blown variant of the 6.2 hides no less than 650 horsepower and 650 lb-ft (881 Nm) of torque under a long, sleek hood further beautified by heat extractors. OK, so the HP aren’t on par with the Hellcat-ified products from Dodge, but the mountain of torque is exactly the same.
But both the Challenger and Charger Hellcat are lardy machines, whereas the Z06 tips the scale at just 3,524 pounds (1,598 kilos) for the coupe. Because the torque-to-weight ratio is a bit better than Dodge’s nuclear warheads and the Z06 is an extremely track-focused vehicle when you go for Z07 Performance Package, the Corvette is a better handler hands down. Sorry Dodge, but that's that, so let's move on.
One detail refused to appear until today and that is its fuel economy figures. Thanks to a bit of searching on the US Department of Energy’s website, we found out that the 2015 Corvette Z06 with the 8L90 eight-speed automatic will return 13 mpg city, 23 mpg highway and a combined rating of 16 mpg.
If you live on the other side of the Atlantic, that would be 18 l / 100 km city and 10 l / 100 km outside it, which isn't half bad to be honest. Even though the 2015 Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat falls short of the Z06's economy by only 1 mpg highway, the Z06 is sipping fuel compared to heavy drinkers such as the Ferrari 458 Speciale, Lamborghini Aventador and the list could go on and on and on. Not bad at all, GM!
