2015 Cadillac Escalade Tested: The 8-Speed Automatic Is a Revelation

Cadillac’s Escalade model was created and is known for its spacious interior and general chilled down character but there was one thing that ruined the new model: its 6-speed transmission. Since GM put together a brand new 8-speed slush box, it would’ve been a shame if the land yacht didn’t get it as well.
As it turns out, one of the two cars we had for testing purposes was equipped with the new box and faith allowed us to test it head to head with its predecessor. The car fitted with the older 6-speed unit was also the bigger version, a 2WD ESV and, believe it or not, managed to impress us too but in a different way.

The ‘granny tranny’ managed to pull off better mpg than the newer one. Admittedly, we tested the 8-speed mostly around town but still, to us, it felt like the 6-speed version is a little less thirsty. Keep in mind the added weight brought on by the extra space offered and you’ve got yourself something to think about.

On the other hand, no matter how much fuel the 8-speed box sipped you can’t but praise it for its other advantages. The most notable one is smoothness.

You see, it’s a shame to ruin a car that is as quiet and posh as the 2015 Escalade with a rough transmission. The suspension absorbs bumps without a cringe and you really feel comfortable in any seat you choose. Even the third row occupants can be as tall as 6 feet and they wouldn’t be restricted in any way. So why would you go with the 6-speed? You wouldn’t.

Actually, Cadillac knows that the GM creation is a home run and won’t let you pick anything else for this luxobarge. Sure, it might not be as efficient as you’d expect but it’s worth every penny, we can guarantee that and we wrote all about the experience in our full 2015 Cadillac Escalade review. Check it out!
