When the nutters in Affalterbach launched their all-wheel drive AMG invasion in 2013, there were people who frowned at the idea, shaking their heads in disapproval and fearing that the brand's tail-happy character might get compromised.
Right-hand drive markets such as the UK, Australia or Japan didn't get 4Matic all-wheel drive, even as an option, because most current rear-wheel drive AMG models weren't originally developed to have the system and their “insides” were configured for left-hand drive driving only when 4Matic is added.
According to Piston Heads, who talked with AMG's new boss Tobias Moers at the LA Auto Show, when given a choice between a rear-wheel drive AMG and a 4Matic one, clients went in a staggering 94 percent towards the all-wheel drive option.
As we told you before, AMG's future resides in using more and more all-wheel drive models, with the only ones that will keep RWD probably being the roadsters.
The first performance model to feature 4Matic traction, apart from the SUVs and the cars built on the MFA platform, is apparently going to be the next C 63 AMG, which is set to be unveiled next year. We're pretty happy about it as long as all-wheel drive remains an option and is not enforced when it comes to big V8 sedans or coupes.
